Under a special set of rare circumstances, propane gas may lose the distinctive odor that was added. This is sometimes called "odor fade."
For example, air, water, or rust in a propane gas tank or cylinder may weaken the gas odor through a chemical process called oxidation. This is most likely to occur in small containers, especially if they were left open after the container had been emptied.
For obvious safety reasons, we want to be sure you can smell the odor of propane gas - and that the gas in your tank is odorized.
Heres what you can do to help:
-
Be sure you and all members of your household are familiar with the distinctive odor of propane gas. The next time your delivery person comes by ask for your free card and ask everyone in your family to take a sniff - for safety's sake.
-
If you think the odor of your propane gas is weak, or if your sense of smell is impaired, call us. Well send a service technician out to verify the odor of the propane gas in your tank.
-
If you have a replaceable cylinder- like the one on a gas grill, for example - be sure to close the valve when the cylinder is empty and install a plastic plug in the outlet opening. (This will keep out air and moisture.)
-
If your new propane gas tank or cylinder contains gas but hasnt been filled for several months, ask us to check the odor.
